What the heck is a rubricator?

Rubricator is derived from the Latin word rubrica, which means “red.” Back in the days before the printing press, when books were all written out by hand, the scribes writing the books would leave blank spaces. They’d skip key bits, like the beginning and end of a chapter. When the rest of the book was done, the scribes would hand off the pages to someone else, who would use special red ink to write those important parts, like chapter titles. Rubrication was a way of decorating the text to make it more beautiful, but it was also a guide for the reader. The red words highlighted the most important parts and helped organize the text. It was so useful that even after the invention of printing, early printers still left blank spaces for rubricators to fill in. If you’ve ever read a book where the chapters began with a single oversized letter, you’ve seen the legacy of rubrication.

When we write code now, we try to act in the spirit of those rubricators, who made books both more beautiful and more useful. Even when the code we write is invisible to the reader, it should still serve the same ends.

How much do your services cost?

We’d love to be able to give you a number before we even begin talking, but the truth is that it depends entirely on what you need, and we won’t know that until we have a conversation. We offer a comprehensive array of creative services, and costs can run anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a simple static website up well into the thousands for a full-fledged e-commerce operation with blogging services, content strategy, SEO, online advertising, hosting, and support.

Do you offer discounted rates for non-profits?

Where are you located?

We’re proudly based in the Raleigh area, but we are happy to work with you where ever you are. One of the great things about the internet is the way it helps people connect across the globe. We know you’re awesome, so we’d love to meet with you in person, but with the collaboration and communication tools we have available, we can give you personalized service without ever setting foot on the same continent.

Who owns the website you build?

You do! Whether we use your content or provide that material for you, whether we handle the hosting or you have your own personal server, whatever work we do for you is one hundred percent yours.

How long does it take to make a website?

About three minutes, depending on how good the connection is to upload the file. But if you want a good website, and we think you do, that takes a little longer. The short answer is that it takes one to two months, but can take a great deal more or less, depending on exactly what you need. Sometimes, if you’re providing the copy, we can put together a static site in a matter of a few days. Usually, it takes a bit longer. For more details, see the next question.

What is the process going to be like?

We begin with a conversation with you to get an understanding of your needs. We may ask you to respond to a personalized questionnaire to both help you think through your needs and to help us develop our plan. Then we’ll put together a proposal and detailed cost estimate and contract for you. Once you’ve approved the estimate, we’ll conduct a competitive analysis of the marketplace. Armed with that information, we’ll put together mock-ups for your approval. The process up to this point usually takes between one and three weeks, depending on the scope of the project. Once you’ve approved the mock-ups, we’ll move into building the site, which usually takes another one to three weeks, again, depending on the scope of the project.

We like to approach our work as a collaboration with our clients. We are, after all, building a site and creating content for you. If you’d prefer to give us our marching orders and set us loose, we’re happy to do that, but the truth is we’d love to be in regular communication, giving you updates on our progress and getting your input as we move forward. It’s much easier to make changes as we go than it is to rethink the whole thing at the last minute.

Will the site you build for me use WordPress?

WordPress is a great content management system that got its start as a blogging platform. It’s moved way beyond those origins though. While it’s still great for starting a blog, there are also tools that can help you run anything from an online storefront to a homegrown social network. We even use it ourselves for this site!

One of the biggest advantages of WordPress is that it allows you to maintain, change, and update your own site without requiring too much technical expertise. WordPress makes it easy to administer your site without help from experts, though we are experts, and we’re happy to help.

But not everyone needs those tools. Some sites just don’t need all that stuff, and even for those that do, there are other content management systems out there. We like to work with you individually to figure out what your needs are before we decide what tools we’ll use to meet those needs. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail, and for a lot of developers out there, WordPress is that hammer. We’re not here to beat your project into being a nail. We keep a big toolbox, and we’ll find the right set of tools to work on your project.
